Developing a unique traineeship model that targets local community members who have a passion for working in aged care, and supports their transition to a role in aged care.

About this program

Our organisation identified an opportunity to improve the quality of our workforce and create a sustainable staff pool in order to meet the unique needs of the business. Through partnership with an apprenticeship services provider and registered training organisation we have developed a unique traineeship model which targets local community members with a passion for working in aged care and provides them the knowledge, experience and support to transition to a role in Aged Care.

The traineeship program commences with information sessions which provide the real view world of working in residential aged care and includes a wide number of key stakeholders who talk to the potential trainees. Interested applicants are then interviewed individually by both the organisation and the RTO to develop a short list of potential candidates. Once selected the trainees commence the program in a supernumery capacity completing both their school work and practical hours within the aged care facility.

The unique program is characterised by a traffic light colour system to ensure both the trainee and fellow staff are clear on the capacity of the trainee at any given time throughout the training program to ensure they are not asked to overstep their capabilities and put themselves, residents or fellow staff at risk.

The goal of the program is to provide a higher quality of new entrant, one who is already “work ready” and who is onboard with the organisation culture and values.
