Supporting residents with dementia to remain actively involved with their environment, both inside and outside the home – new activities, redesigning spaces and embracing technology.
About the program
This is a simple story about how we created opportunities that supported residents with dementia to remain actively involved with their environment both inside and outside the home. The facility is a 10-storey building in the heart of Kings Cross with minimal outside spaces. This story is about a team who looked for creative ways to eke out every inch of what we had in the building and look to make spaces that residents could access and enjoy. It’s also about the team looking at how residents could still enjoy city life with its familiar busyness and rhythm whilst still remaining safe and supported. This story is about really getting to know residents and what makes them tick and providing a home that encourages going out even if you never leave the home, assists residents to enjoy going out with friends and most importantly enables residents to interact with the social world beyond the homes walls embracing a wider community and promoting happiness and well-being.
To do this we started a number of activities as well as embrace technology. Something old-we supported standard walking activities outside the home, something borrowed-utilising Montessori principles of enablement we created The Club and redesigned spaces inside the home, and something new-we reached for technology to become aged cares friend rather than something to be feared.
